Casting Instruction
Fishing from the bow of the "Knee Deep" off the coast of Tarpon Springs, Florida, in
January of 2012. The "Knee Deep" is a Pathfinder shallow bay boat skippered by
Captain Jared Crisp out Tarpon Springs.
As a Certified Adaptive Fly Fishing Practitioner, I hold the highest professional certification in the specialized field of teaching fly casting to people with disabilities and special needs. I am also a certified Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Angler Educator (Basic & Intermediate Fly Fishing).
I teach beginner through advanced one-handed fly casting, introductory two-handed overhead fly casting, and Japanese Tenkara fishing.

I have taught fly casting for: Dept. of Physical Education - Missouri State University, Bass Pro Shops (Springfield, MO; Orlando, FL; Branson, MO), the US Army, Texas Hunting & Fishing Expo - Arlington Convention Center, Southern Council of FFF Conclave 2006-2008 in Mountain Home, AR, Gulf Coast Council of FFF Expo 2009 in New Braunfel, TX, and at a large number of adaptive fly fishing events in VA, NC, GA, FL, TN, MO, TX, NM, and CO.
Many years of formal and advanced training and competition in martial arts, shooting sports, fencing, and tennis, as well as training and certification as a US Navy Master Fitness Trainer also play a role in my approach to fly casting instruction. So does the fact that I struggle with disabilities which effect my own ability to cast, and have taught dozens of disabled people to fly fish who have gone on to become avid and successful fly anglers. Teaching healthy people is a breeze!
Student, Ian, at the 2008 Southern Council of FFF Conclave as we prepared to leave.
Ian came to my casting clinic. Then I took him fishing. He is a fantastic fly tier...
and a quadriplegic right leg amputee who now casts 70' accurately from a wheelchair
with a single haul cast and caught his first (and several more) trout the day we fished.
